Stink bug guide for North Alabama homes

Stink bugs in the house?
Stop the fall invasion.

Stink bugs do not belong indoors, but they are excellent at finding the tiny gaps around a home when weather turns cool. Deal with today’s stragglers calmly, then close the routes that invited them in.

Most stink bugs found indoors in fall and winter are looking for a sheltered place to wait out the cold. You may see them around windows, lights, curtains, ceiling corners, or warm exterior walls. They are not feeding on your home, but crushing them can release the odor that gave them their name.

Start with exclusion—not indoor spraying

Once stink bugs have settled inside wall voids and protected cracks, a quick indoor spray does not solve the entry problem. The lasting answer is keeping them from getting in. A focused inspection around exterior openings is more valuable than trying to treat every individual bug inside.

How to prevent them

  • Caulk cracks and gaps. Check around windows, doors, siding, fascia, utility penetrations, and trim.
  • Refresh weatherstripping and door sweeps. If daylight or a draft can come through, stink bugs may be able to as well.
  • Repair screens and protect vents. Keep window, attic, and crawlspace screens in good condition. Use proper covers that still allow required airflow.
  • Inspect before fall. The best time for repairs is before warm fall days bring large groups to the outside of the house.
The first sign of stink bugs outside is the time to call.Once they have worked into wall voids, attic gaps, and other protected spaces, preventing an indoor invasion can become much harder.

How to handle the ones already inside

A shop vac can be your new best friend here too. Use a crevice attachment to collect individual bugs from window tracks, curtains, corners, and light fixtures. Work gently; the goal is to remove them before they are handled or crushed. For a few easy-to-reach bugs, a cup and sheet of paper works fine as well.

After you vacuum them up

Take the contents outside promptly. Seal and discard a bagged vacuum bag outdoors, or empty a canister into a sealable bag outside and tie it closed. Stink bugs can smell in an enclosed vacuum, so do not leave the collection sitting inside your home. Clean the vacuum according to its manufacturer’s instructions before putting it away.

When to call a professional

Call at the first sign of stink bugs gathering on the outside of your home. Do not wait until they are coming through walls, ceilings, or windows. Early action gives us the best chance to identify the routes they are using and address them before they settle into protected areas. If they are already inside, we can still help, but preventing the season’s invasion may be much harder.
